5R55 Transmission - Missing Sensor Hole

Years & Models Affected: 1997 Explorer, Ranger & Aerostar

Issue:

You’ve just purchased a remanufactured transmission for your 1997 Ford and when you open the pod you notice that there is sensor hole missing right behind the bell housing on the driver’s side.

Resolution:

Some 1997 5R55E transmissions were built with a fully functional Overdrive drum sensor. Ford says the computers were never programed to use the signal, and suggests that you disable the sensor.

To disable the OD drum sensor properly, simply cut the two wires that go to the sensor, twist the ends together on the vehicle harness side, fold over, and tape to harness. This will prevent stray signals from confusing the computer.
